But don't some liberals want to limit the influence the bible has in society? The passage of many of the social liberal laws is in direct contradiction to scripture, so in that way it could be viewed that the bible's influence is to be squelched. Republicans go for the KISS method, while the dems use nuance. It makes up for the phony guard docs, the calling Bush a liar, and saying Bush will implement a draft. In other words it is hardball politics. View it as a meta-fur.

Natalie

So you’re saying that it is okay to use God’s Word to manipulate people to vote a certain way?

“Hardball politics” aside, this article jumped out at me because I like to study how we often pigeonhole those who are conservative theologically into being conservative politically. Yes, there are social liberal laws that directly contradict God’s desire for society, but being libertarian in some things politically is not “unchristian.”

One more comment, which should state my position more clearly. Look at who is making these statements (partisans), Look at who is making false statements about the President (Main Stream Media) Go to Powerlineblog.com to see what the AP has done now.
It is far more frightening to me that journalist distort and lie than to see some partisan flier sent out by a Republican group. Have you visited MoveOn.org lately?

Christianity has long been lacking a social conscious. I was one of the few evangelical christians in the world opposed to the war. Not because I didn't think that Saddam needed to stopped, but because Christians were making it a religious war. To listen to some people at my Seminary you would think we were starting the crusades all over again. They were evil by the way!

Anyway, there is a place in the middle that can be reached if someone would run for office that had a backbone. There are plenty of us that would follow. American's are not at the extreme ends of the spectrum. They stand in the middle. It is just that the extremists from both sides control the rhetoric.

For me when riding the pendulum from the far right to the far left the middle is really the best place to get off.

Natalie

Love the pendulum metaphor...but as I am trying to determine my political beliefs, sometimes I feel that as a Christian I have my feet planted firmly on opposite sides of the fence--not really the middle but more like a pull from both sides. It gets confusing and complicated many times, because at least I don't feel like I fit in one clean-cut category or another.

Lyle

And I think in 2008 the political picture may get fuzzier. The rising stars in the Republican Party are social moderates(pro-choice, pro-gay rights, etc.). Then where will social conservatives place their allegiance? Will the dems be smart enough to dare to woo social conservatives? Probably not. If that were the case I could see justification for switching sides if pro-lifers were not given a voice.
I feel I have to vote pro-life, but if I can't I'll look at both parties differently than I do now.
